Floating Screen Car Stereos & Large Touchscreen Head Units

PLAN YOUR LARGE-SCREEN UPGRADE

Choosing a Floating Screen Car Stereo

Floating screen car stereos provide a large touchscreen while using a compact or modular installation chassis. Available with screen sizes from 9 to 11 inches, these head units combine smartphone connectivity, digital radio and multimedia features with flexible dashboard installation.

How does a floating screen car stereo work?

FLOATING DISPLAY

Screen Positioned in Front of the Dashboard

Instead of sitting entirely inside the radio aperture, the screen is mounted in front of the dashboard. This allows a larger display to be used without requiring the complete screen to fit inside a conventional Double DIN opening.

COMPACT CHASSIS

Single DIN or Modular Installation

Many floating screen head units use a Single DIN installation chassis. Others separate the screen from the main control unit, providing additional flexibility for dashboards with restricted space behind the original radio.

ADJUSTABLE POSITION

Set the Screen for Your Dashboard

Selected models allow the screen height, depth or viewing angle to be adjusted. Available adjustment differs between products, so check the individual specification and dashboard clearance before ordering.

Which floating screen size should I choose?

9 INCH

Large Without Being Excessive

A 9-inch floating screen offers a substantial display for navigation, music and camera viewing while remaining suitable for a wide range of cars, vans and campervans. It is a practical starting point for many large-screen upgrades.

10.1 INCH

More Screen Space

A 10.1-inch car stereo provides a larger viewing area and can suit vehicles with broader dashboards. Carefully check the position of air vents, heater controls, switches and other dashboard functions.

11 INCH

Maximum Display Size

An 11-inch floating touchscreen can work particularly well in vans, pick-up trucks and motorhomes with larger dashboards. The additional screen area makes compatible navigation and camera images easier to view.

What should I check for a safe screen position?

AIR VENTS

Heating and Ventilation

Check whether the screen could restrict important air vents or make heater and climate controls difficult to reach. The chosen position should allow the dashboard controls to remain usable.

SWITCHES & DISPLAYS

Dashboard Functions

Make sure the display does not obstruct hazard-light switches, passenger-airbag indicators, parking controls, original screens or other legally required information.

DRIVER VIEW

Visibility and Reach

The screen should be positioned where it can be viewed and operated without unnecessarily obstructing the driver’s view through the windscreen. Adjustment options depend on the stereo selected.

What fitting parts might I need?

DASHBOARD FITMENT

Fascia and Mounting Parts

A vehicle-specific fascia adapter, installation cage or mounting kit may be required to secure the stereo chassis. The correct parts depend on the vehicle and whether the stereo uses a Single DIN, Double DIN or modular installation.

POWER & CONTROLS

Wiring and Steering Controls

A wiring harness connects the new stereo to the vehicle. Additional interfaces may be required to provide ignition power, retain steering-wheel controls, integrate a factory amplifier or maintain other original features.

RADIO RECEPTION

AM/FM and DAB Aerial Adapters

An aerial adapter may be needed to connect the factory antenna. Some vehicles require a powered adapter, while DAB reception may require a separate windscreen or vehicle-specific digital-radio aerial.

Can I connect cameras, amplifiers and a subwoofer?

CAMERA INPUTS

Front and Reverse Cameras

Selected floating screen stereos include one or more camera inputs. When correctly installed, a compatible reverse camera can display automatically when reverse gear is selected.

AUDIO TUNING

Equaliser and Time Alignment

Depending on the model, audio controls can include a multi-band equaliser, crossovers, time alignment, speaker-level adjustment and subwoofer control for more detailed system tuning.

SYSTEM EXPANSION

Amplifier and Subwoofer Outputs

RCA pre-amplifier outputs allow compatible amplifiers and subwoofers to be added. Check the number of outputs and available audio settings when planning a larger car audio system.

What should I check before ordering?

IMPORTANT FITTING CHECK

Vehicle, Stereo and Dashboard Compatibility

Confirm the vehicle make, model, year, original radio and factory audio system. Check the required fascia, wiring, aerial adapter, steering-wheel control interface and available space behind the dashboard.

You should also check the screen’s width, height and available adjustment against the position of air vents, heater controls, switches and the driver’s view. Use the InCarTec vehicle search or contact our team if compatibility is uncertain.

Floating Screen Car Stereo FAQs

Answers to common questions about screen size, installation, smartphone connectivity and vehicle compatibility.

Will a floating screen stereo fit any car?

No. The vehicle must have sufficient space for the stereo chassis and floating display. A fascia adapter, wiring harness, aerial adapter or steering-wheel control interface may also be required.

What is the difference between floating screen and Double DIN?

A conventional Double DIN screen sits within the dashboard opening. A floating screen is positioned in front of the dashboard and can provide a larger display while using a more compact installation chassis.

Can a floating screen stereo fit a Single DIN dashboard?

Selected models use a Single DIN chassis and can fit compatible Single DIN dashboard openings. Vehicle-specific mounting, wiring and fascia parts may still be needed.

Will the screen block my air vents or controls?

It can if the screen is too large or incorrectly positioned. Check the stereo dimensions and adjustment range against the vehicle’s air vents, heater controls, switches and dashboard displays before ordering.

Can I retain my steering-wheel controls?

Usually, provided a compatible steering-wheel control interface and stereo-specific patch lead are available. Compatibility depends on the vehicle, original audio system and stereo selected.

Can I connect a reverse camera?

Yes, if the stereo has a compatible camera input. The camera also requires power, a video connection and normally a reverse trigger so the display changes automatically when reverse gear is selected.

Do I need a DAB aerial?

A suitable DAB aerial is required for digital-radio reception. Some vehicles can retain the original antenna with the correct adapter, while others need a separate windscreen or vehicle-specific aerial.

Are all floating screens adjustable?

No. The available height, depth and angle adjustment differs between models. Check the individual product specification and installation instructions before choosing a stereo.
